My mother passed away in March of 2023. She loved butterflies and earth toned colors. When I was able to go through her jewelry, I found these earrings with these great olive green teardrop beads but I hated the chains they were on, and the ear hooks. I decided to make some earrings to revive them and although these aren’t colors I usually wear, I have a skirt that goes great with that green.

The original earrings, and the beads I found to go with. I ended up getting different beads, and only used the bronze metal beads on the right.

Stitched with size 11 and size 15 miyuki seed beads, 4mm Preciosa fire polish, bronze metal faceted beads, Fireline in Smoke.

Pattern Used: “Amunet” Earrings by poetryinbeads on Etsy

After I made the earrings, I found this bronze steampunk butterfly in my supplies. Mom wasn’t terribly into Steampunk (I was kind of into it during its heyday in the late ‘00s and early ‘10s) but she always called it “Steamrock” which I thought was adorable. This butterfly was the perfect color for this set! This was actually my introduction to beading around rivolis as well, as you can see in the center of the star.

Stitched with sz 11/0 and 15/0 Miyuki seed beads, 4mm Preciosa fire polish, 4mm Preciosa bicones, bronze metal beads, 12mm rivoli.

I can’t remember if I did the bracelet or necklace first, but this is a pretty simple bracelet using the same bead mix. Worked up very quickly!

Stitched with size 11 and size 15 miyuki seed beads, 4mm Preciosa fire polish, bronze metal faceted beads, Fireline in Smoke.

Sadly, part of this set was stolen while I had it on display at a local art show in April 2025. The thief made off with the necklace and one of the earrings, so I still have the bracelet and one earring. It is extremely upsetting that the earrings were split up because what is someone going to do with one earring? It probably ended up in the trash. I do not have another drop bead to remake the stolen earring and I don’t have another of the bronze butterflies but I may have enough of the other beads to remake it. I may try to find another butterfly but I am not sure what to do about the earrings. I had actually worn this set several times as I have a skirt that goes perfectly with it so I genuinely liked it apart from the sentimental value.

But I wanted to share them to share the “pattern” I used for them. I found this on Pinterest and it says it’s from a beading website called Pandahall but it is just a screen shot, no written instructions and the link doesn’t go to that tutorial. I couldn’t find anything else through reverse image searching, so I did my best and came out with these.

This pattern uses a double 2-needle method which was a bit weird and complicated to wrangle, even for these small earrings! But I did like how they turned out; I wish I’d had a bigger drop bead for the dangle, it needs more weight on the bottom.

Stitched with size 11/0 Miyuki Montana Blue seed beads, size 15/0 Miyuki metallic gold seed beads, 4 mm Preciosa bicones in Montana Blue, 3.4 mm drop beads in Montana Blue, Fireline in Smoke.

I had some blue iris beads but they were not the best brand and inconsistently sized. I love the gray tone of the Montana blue color – it matches my eyes :-)

Sadly, this piece was stolen while I had it on display at a local art show in April 2025. I have enough of most of the beads to re-make it, but not the drop beads. I may even remake it with a different blue like cobalt or blue iris.

I also had some bicones that were kind of blue & black which went really well and led me to a blue & black color scheme.

I struggled with this pendant so much; first with the physical part - once I got the embroidery part done and was trying to reinforce and weave back through, the beads were really tight and I did break one of the clear picot edge beads and broke a needle. Then I struggled with how to do the necklace part, I tried 3 different stitches before settling on a double Russian snake chain stitch which I really like.

I am overall pleased with how this necklace turned out, it is only my second cabochon bezel and I learned a lot from the experience.

Stitched with size 11/0 and 15/0 Miyuki seed beads, size 8/0 seed beads, unknown brand bicones and fire polish rounds.

I do still have some of the purple beads (and of course the black seed beads) so I will probably do something else in these same colors.

I love the purpley color of the rondelles – it makes me think of blackberries.

This necklace uses the same pattern as the “Carapace” necklace – I just modified the beads and amount/length of fringe. That’s the great thing about these basic stitches – you can do so many different things to create a completely different look!

I found this pattern on beadsmagic.com and decided to make a pair of red and gold earrings. I already had all these beads in my stash for years so they were all unlabeled - I am 95% sure the dark red(garnet) bicones are Swarovski from the mid-2000s. Now that I am more serious about beading I am better about keeping the labels on my beads, especially since finding out about color numbers!

These are made using netting stitch and fringe – I did a modified fringe from what the pattern shows but I really like how these earrings swing and they make little clinking noises when you move your head :-)

Stitched with size 11/0 Czech seed beads in two reds (not sure of color name), possibly Swarovski 4mm bicones in garnet, 4mm bicones in red, glass drop crystals in two reds unknown brand.

I have a better handle now on what quantities of beads I tend to need for projects – but I do still like to have lots of colors on hand. When I make a piece of jewelry I usually want to make something else to go with it – whether it’s earrings, a bracelet or a necklace, or the whole set!

I decided to make a bracelet (or two) to go with the necklace and earrings I had just made, so I whipped up these bracelets using RAW and netting stitch. Also since I had so many beads to use up….

For the netting bracelet, I mapped out the pattern using netting stitch graph paper which is so useful! You can find lots of beading graph paper online, I used the one from Fire Mountain Gems linked below.

For the RAW bracelet, I had two variations of Montana Blue fire polish beads and I decided to use the opaque one (called Pastel Montana Blue for some reason) down the middle and the transparent ones on the edges.

Netting Bracelet: Stitched with size 11/0 Miyuki Montana Blue seed beads, size 15/0 Miyuki metallic gold seed beads, 4 mm Preciosa bicones in Montana Blue, Fireline.

RAW bracelet: Stitched with size 11/0 Czech metallic gold seed beads, 4 mm Czech fire polish in Montana Blue Transparent and Pastel Montana Blue, Fireline.

I also had some Tigereye beads which I thought looked good with the jasper.

I glued some felt to the back of the cabochon with E6000 and used bead embroidery stitch and then peyote to encase the cabochon. This is how I found out that size 11 Delicas are slightly smaller than size 11 rocailles. It helps to use smaller beads to cinch in the beading so that it encases the cabochon. I’ve done a few more pendants like this and I tend to use size 11 rocailles as the first 2-3 rows, then size 11 cylinder beads for 2-3 rows, then size 15 rocailles for the last 2-3 rows.

I didn’t have any size 15s in my stash that would match, but I did have the dark smoky amethyst AB, which I thought looked nice with the brown tones.

I also learned some other new stitches with this necklace – peyote for the bail, herringbone spiral rope for the lower half of the strap and then flat spiral stitch for the upper half.

Stitched with size 11/0 Czech seed beads, size 11/0 Miyuki Delicas, size 15/0 Miyuki rocailles, 3 mm and 4 mm bicones, various size tigereye beads, Fireline.

I think it looks more like sunstone in my opinion 😊 I loved how the color harmonized with the topaz luster bead mix and gold beads.

This set was my introduction to peyote stitch in general, specifically tubular peyote stitch and the peyote warped square. I needed ideas on how to use the donut and, through Pinterest, found out about these warped squares. There’s actually a LOT you can do with these warped squares, and lots of tutorials out there on how to make them. I used a size 11 Czech seed bead mix and Fireline in Crystal for these pieces.

If you are interested in making a peyote warped square OR tubular peyote stitch, you can find tutorials all over the internet.

I do still really like this bracelet and had worn it several times before it was stolen; I MAY have enough in my stash to recreate this piece, or at least an approximation of it.

I found many versions of this type of netting stitch necklace online. It is a pretty simple pattern to make and very versatile in what beads you can include and how to do the fringe…it helps to have a longer needle if you’re making the fringe longer!

Probably Orange Crush for me. However, orange and yellow aren’t my favorite colors to wear – I tend to go for deeper jewel tones. I had these orange beads in my stash so decided to use up some of them, and actually bought my first size 15 Miyuki seed beads for this pattern.

I did end up remaking this bracelet; I used white Nymo to begin with and even after reinforcement it was floppy, so once I got some Fireline and learned of the difference between the two types of thread, I redid this one with Fireline in Crystal and it was much improved

This bracelet is stitched with size 11 Czech (orange) and size 15 Miyuki (yellow) glass seed beads, 4mm orange crystal bicone beads and Fireline in Crystal.

18cm total length, 2.4cm wide.
